A Seniors Vacation in Costa Rica can be satisfying, fun, and memorable. It is a small country that has a bit of everything! For nature lovers is paradise, for romance is ideal, and as a place to enjoy the beauty of our planet is perfect.
A seniors vacation in Costa Rica is, without a doubt, a great idea. The country is gorgeous; its nature is as intense as can be, yet peaceful and joyful.
There are adventures as extreme or as mild as you want them to be, and hotels and lodges are prepared to grant comfort to every visitor.
This is the second part of this post, and we are writing about destinations, accommodations, and activities to enjoy on a Seniors vacation in Costa Rica.
Let’s talk first about the destinations and what do they offer in accommodations and experiences.
For a Seniors Vacation in Costa Rica, it is important to think about regions that are easy to reach, and that can grant a medical facility close by. Facilities that may have rooms with railings on the bathroom (If they are needed) and that may assure the possibility of a fridge to grant some medications will be taken care of.
We also have to think about hotels that have areas where stairs are not needed, that don’t have long walks up the hill and that don’t have a town or city noise nearby.
And in terms of the activities, we are suggesting the ones all ages can do and enjoy. Hikes with paved trails, not too strenuous or difficult and short enough to go back to enjoying the pool (Or the balcony) of the room.
San José City:
It’s, of course, the capital city and depending on your flight’s arrival time, your first night will be spent there.
If you do, you can enjoy a walk in the city, a visit to the jade museum or the national Theater or dinner in the beautiful Barrio Escalante. You may enjoy one of the hop-on and hop-off city tour buses or a regular city tour that will grant you a tour guide with all the information you may want to hear about the city and the history of Costa Rica.
The Escalante neighborhood is an upscale area that has been transformed into a very stylish icon for people to enjoy pubs, beer factories, and a great variety of restaurants.
If you like, you can stay in San José and enjoy one day tours to volcanoes, rainforests like the La Paz Waterfalls Garden or the Aerial Tram, and beach days in the Central Pacific area (In Tortuga Island or Manuel Antonio National Park day tours).
In San José, there are many classy options to stay, either at known and gorgeous hotels like Marriott, Hyatt, or the Holiday Inn or boutique hotels on the outskirts of the capital city.
And from San José, a seniors vacation in Costa Rica may want to go to many other destinations depending of course on your needs and wishes.
So, let’s start naming some of the best spots that people in the golden years may enjoy the most.
Tortuguero in the North Caribbean of Costa Rica is a national park that you can enjoy sitting comfortably on an open boat.
It is a humid rainforest with a fantastic array of species and a quite dense animal population.
You may watch three species of monkeys, two species of sloths, several types of toucans and depend on the time of year, watching the sea turtles nesting at night.
The area is completely flat, there might be nature walks, but mostly all activities are enjoyed by boat.
For seniors vacations in Costa Rica, we recommend Tortuga Lodge and Laguna Lodge, especially.
Rooms are quite simple and don’t have tv sets, although mostly all offer efficient WIFI.
Tortuguero is a fantastic destination for our golden years’ vacation in Costa Rica. It is very easy going, you can see abundant wildlife without having to move much and the place itself invites travelers to simply sit and breathe in the luscious tropical nature of this remarkable region.
La Fortuna and Arenal Volcano
This popular area is as strenuous or as easy as you want it to be.
You may delight in tours like the Chocolate tour, where you can learn a lot from the cocoa process but also enjoy the tasting with different spices.
You can also enjoy the hanging bridges through the forest. They are built for a leisurely walk on flat paved trails.
You may also love the sloths’ tour in a family property that has a small patch of forest with a dense sloths population.
Or the night walk that will show you the intense vibration of the jungle at night.
For accommodations, we especially recommend Casa Luna Hotel and Spa and the famous Tabacon Resort. Both have paved pathways and gorgeous gardens.
Arenal Volcano and La Fortuna Town are a perfect region to move under your own rhythm. If you are very active and you like extreme adventure you will find it here. If you simply want to enjoy the comfort and easiness of vacation without doing much, this is also the place for you.
Monteverde Cloud Forest
Monteverde is a world-renowned destination for nature lovers and bird watchers.
It has great walks at the preserved areas in the region where you could watch with luck the evasive Resplendent Quetzal.
In Monteverde, you can find great agricultural activities like the sugar mill (El Trapiche) at a family farm where you will learn much more than just about sugar.
You may also enjoy a similar family feeling at the Don Juan Coffee Tour, where you will learn about the artisanal coffee production.
In the area, you may also enjoy the fantastic hanging bridges where you will reach the tops of the trees in a relaxed and comfortable walk through an easy concrete trail.
The hotels we recommend the most for a Seniors vacation in Monteverde are El Establo and Monteverde Mountain Lodge.
Monteverde is an ideal spot for a seniors vacation. Like Arenal you can choose your activity level and experiencing the cloud forests is almost compulsory for any nature lover, of any age.
Manuel Antonio National Park and region are probably the most popular spot for any visitor in Costa Rica.
And it is ideal for a seniors vacation as the areas where you go, and the activities you pick will be as strenuous or relaxed as you want them to be.
You can go for a walk in the Manuel Antonio National Park, a gorgeous set of beaches surrounded by a diverse rainforest that reaches towards the water.
You may also enjoy a leisurely ride on a boat by the luscious mangroves of Damas Island.
And there is hardly an experience as memorable as going on a catamaran bordering the golden coast of Quepos and Manuel Antonio while watching dolphins and searching for elusive whales and sea turtles.
The hotels we recommend the most are the Espadilla Suites right by the national park and the first beach and El Parador up the mountain and with breathtaking marine views.
Manuel Antonio is one of those vacation spots that can work as a sole destination as it has so much to do, enjoy and live! With its fantastic hotels, breathtaking landscapes and rainforests, abundant wildlife sightings, it also offers a lot of adventures and more strenuous experiences. In the South Caribbean, Puerto Viejo, Cahuita, and Manzanillo are areas where you will find a connection with the rainforest, diverse wildlife, and the easy-going Caribbean vibe.
You must try the coconut-based recipes typical of this region and enjoy the walks at the golden, white, and deep black sands of the nearby beaches.
You will delight on a walk by the Cahuita National Park, and, if you are into submarine activities, the coral reef snorkel excursion is compulsory.
You can also enjoy a visit to the Kekoldi community. With some hiking and canoeing involved, this is an experience that will take you into an immersion of ancient cultures.
We especially recommend the Villas del Caribe hotel right at Cocles Beach. A fresh and innovative set of rooms that will allow you to take in all nature’s beauty and diversity in perfect tranquility.
Aguas Claras is an upscale proposal in a gorgeous boutique hotel that is as personable as it is beautiful. With a great beach club in front of the beach and surrounded by the rainforests of the SouthCaribbean
The South Caribbean of Costa Rica is an ideal area to relax and experience the fantastic Caribbean vibes. It is luscious and beautiful, biologically intense yet laid back and easy going. The perfect place for a relaxing vacation!
And totally on the other side, the fantastic Tamarindo Beach, in the North Pacific province of Guanacaste.
Tamarindo, a surfers heaven, is a place to enjoy a small city by a beautiful beach. With malls and a fantastic gastronomical offer, Tamarindo is an excellent spot to end a vacation and even to spend the whole time there.
It has fantastic activities that go from sailing at sunset to surfing classes. You can go kayaking in the nearby Tamarindo Mangroves, and there are one-day options to nearby volcanoes and adventurous options like ziplining.
If you would like to enjoy all the buzzing of a touristic town by the ocean, we recommend you to stay at the Tamarindo Diriá Hotel.
Right in front of the beautiful beach and with a tropical garden filled with palm trees and a delicious restaurant, the Tamarindo Diriá is a fantastic option for those who like to combine leisure time with dining out and enjoying a more significant sort of activities at walking distance.
You may also enjoy the tranquility of Cala Luna Hotel, a bit away from the hectic town. Still, at walking distance, Cala Luna offers unique and beautiful accommodations, and it’s also right by the beach.
Tamarindo Beach is a fantastic spot for senior vacations as it has several choices for more active people and the easiness and comfort of a busy town with everything you need and near the ocean.
