A romantic small town located in the clouds is a great way to describe Monteverde. This small, but highly touristy town is located in the Northeast of Costa Rica, in the province of Puntarenas, about 4 hours from the capital city of San Jose.
The cloud forest climate of Monteverde has allowed it to become a favorite among eco-tourists, since it is also home to over 400 species of birds including the splendid Quetzal, 120 species of amphibians and reptiles, and 2500 different plants, including over 400 species of beautifully colored orchids.
We can divide Monteverde’s weather into a wet and a dry season, however it is important to note that the cloud cover and fog are almost always present. The coldest months are January and February, with an average temperature of 13° C (55° F). The warmest months are April and May, when the average temperature is about 23° C (74° F). The overall anual average temperature is about 18° C (64° F). September and October are the rainiest months and March and April are the driest.
Tourism is the economic base of Monteverde, so you can find a variety of hotels to meet each taste and budget. Many of the locals have learned English to be able to better serve their guests.
Among the most famous places in Monteverde, we could mention the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, the Santa Elena Reserve in the nearby town, the Children’s Eternal Rainforest, Monteverde’s Butterfly Gardens, and the Snake Gardens, also located in Santa Elena.
